Is rain/wind enough to delay or cancel a flight?
Okay, I am freaking out. I have a flight on Tuesday from Oakland to Los Angeles, and the predicted weather forecast is: Windy with periods of rain. High 54F. Winds WNW at 20 to 30 mph. Chance of rain 90%. I have to go home for Thanksgiving and this is the first time I have been on a plane in five years. Help? Thank you!

Normal rain and some wind won't affect the flight. In January I flew from Amsterdam. While I was waiting for the start, I saw tons of snowflakes under the lamps outside snowing from left to right (or was it right to left) because of wind. The flight was on time.

According to the datas given by you it won't be a problem. Happy Journey.

Not based on that forecast ... the flight will not be canceled. However it will be a bumpy ride out.

Wind and rain can certainly delay or cancel a flight. But ordinary rain, even heavy rain, usually at most delays a flight. Rain can be heavy or it can last a long time, but it cannot do both unless you're talking about a hurricane or monsoon. So typical rain isn't a problem. Wind is really only a problem if the airport has no runway that faces into the wind. Both SFO and LAX have runways that point in all directions, so even a worst case wind would only be at a 45 degree angle. Passenger jets have no problem with a 30 mile per hour wind at a 45 degree angle. Fortunately, both SFO and LAX have so many runways and are so well engineered that 30 mile per hour winds won't even cause delays.

That forecast shouldn't effect your flight too much.

It depend on how strong the wind and heavy the rain is, however foggy condition the flight will be delay. see this short clip on how plane land during windy condition. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5X_7Xt2ga-s&feature=related

The guys sitting in the front of your plane won't be bothered by those conditions at all. As you're sitting there remember those folks up front have more recurrent training than the surgeon who put your grandma's pacemaker in.

The weather conditions you describe will not delay or cancel flights.

Hi the only thing to stop the flight would be a surface wind component blowing at 90 degrees to the take off runway at or above the crosswind limit of the aircraft, different aircraft have different limits, these limits are there to ensure the aircraft on its takeoff run remains directionaly controllable up to its rotate speed ( the speed at which the aircraft wheels leave contact with the runway surface, rgds Eddy
