Can anyone help: Need cheap air flight in May?
Im going to California in May for 2 days and am looking for really cheap tickets (due to a tight budget). Trying to find tickets leaving from Washington Dulles airport to Oakland California from May 23 - May 25 (or 26th). Trying to get an early morning flight in (like departing between 5am and 7am) and an afternoon flight out (leaving somewhere between 11am - 1pm). I have some flexibility that its possible I can take a flight out the next day (the 26th) in the morning. Can anyone help me find the best deal? I dont care if theres a stop during the flight (although non-stop would be wonderful!!).

You won't find anything "cheap" that is transcontinental, especially in May, considering that is peak travel season, and airlines just did a massive airfare hike, without signs of going back down. Being that you are flying from DC to Oakland, you have alternative airports you can try in both cities to find a lower fare. Check DCA and BWI and then SFO and SJC (San Jose) as back up for Oakland. You are looking at $345 from IAD to SFO on Southwest Airlines with a connection. $325 for IAD to OAK $394 IAD to SJC and BWI to OAK Checking other airlines, its around the same, $350-$700 round trip. From those cities that is about what you can expect. If you want Nonstop look at United or Continental. They are showing $319 round trip on United and Continental on Orbitz and Fly.com. They have some connections as low as $298, but I'd spend the extra $20 and go non-stop. It's IAD to SFO, so if the distance is worth the cost savings, I'd jump on that, otherwise you'll pay closer to $400 to go to Oakland with connections. I'd say $319 is about an average price for that route. If you book with Orbitz, if the fares drop, and someone books the same flights at a lower price, you'll get a refund of the difference. Also, you may need to be flexible with your departure times to get the lower fares, so keep that in mind as well. IF you choose to use the Priceline name your own price feature, be aware that those are the most restricted tickets and you cannot change them for any reason. Also, if you bid and are rejected, be aware that Priceline now has your CC info and they can accept your offer at a later date. I've seen people bid, be rejected, book with another airline, and then Priceline accepts their bid 5 days later, charges the CC and now you have 2 non-refundable tickets. So just use caution if you choose to go that route. The best thing for you to do is keep an eye on airfare sales, they just had a HUGE on out to the west coast for $89 each way. Sign up for alerts from Southwest, Fly.com, United and Continental. You still have time to get some fare sales, if they have any. However they are becoming few and far between. For United and Continental, I've always found booking on the travel sites is cheaper than directly with them. However, no matter what travel site you use, make sure you READ THE FARE RULES to know what you are agreeing to. Also make sure you pay attention to the total fare price, not just the base that they post to draw your attention in.

Oakland is not a cheap airport to fly into. I suggest you try looking at flying into San Francisco. You can get non-stop flights on United from Washington Dulles into San Francisco. Another option is to see how much airfare is on Southwest departing from Baltimore.
