Should I choose SouthWest Airlines or Alaska Airlines?
I'm planing a trip from Burbank,California to Portland,Oregon. Both Southwest and Alaska have fares that match each other at the same times. Alaska goes non-stop from Burbank while Southwest requires a plane change in Oakland,California. The only reason I may choose Southwest over Alaska is because I have enough Southwest gift cards to pay for my roundtrip flight. Alaskas non-stop flight takes 2 hours. Southwest takes 3 and a half hours including the layover stop. If I had to pay out of my pocked I would choose Alaska. Since I have Southwest gift cards this may be a good time to use them. Alaska Air lines doesn't go to NY. Alaska Airlines got all new planes one year ago. The person who got stuck in Seattle was probably on an old plane. Alaska Air is one of the only financially healthy airlines in the US besides Southwest. This trip would be one way from Burbank to Portland and one way from Seattle back to Burbank.

I think you answered your own question.

my kids and I flew from NY to Juneau. it was hell all the way through on Alaska airlines. first, the check in counter people closed almost 45 min early, forcing me and my 4 kids to catch the "next" flight, which was the next day. oh did I mention I was pregnant at the time? lets see, we got into Seattle, tired and miserable, and just as we were taxing out of Seattle, our plane broke. so we got held there for longer, waiting for a new plane. they handed out these little "care ticket" things for $6.00 when EVERYTHING to eat was more than $7. the only thing i have to say good about them was the flight attendants from NY to Seattle. they were a god send. the ones that switched on from I think it was Ketchican were snobby, uptight and downright rude. I say go Southwest. When my fiance comes home from Iraq on leave, I'm booking all his flights with any other airlines other than Alaska Air.

Both are excellent airlines. I tend to avoid Southwest whenever possible because one of the luxuries I like from my airline is assigned seating, which is not offered by Southwest. I tend to refer to them as "the cattle car." I'd also choose Alaska because of the nonstop factor. One never knows when weather can be an issue or maintenance (as the past couple of weeks have painfully reminded travellers) grounds a plane. A nonstop flight always gives you better odds of actually making it to your destination. I think my very best commercial flight experience -- ever -- was on Alaska Airlines on a trip to Seattle.

I would find out when the Southwest gift cards expire and if the cards lose some of their value if not used up within a certain amount of time. If the gift cards did not come into play, I would choose Alaska because to me I choose a non-stop flight over one that requires a connection. Too many things can happen if you have to connect.
