Why are there very few midwest and east coast flights from Burbank airport?
I have lived in the San fernando valley area for 25 years. Everytime I fly I have a choice between non-stop flights from crowded LAX or connecting flights from Burbank. Why can't Burbank offer flights to Hawaii, Chicago And Atlanta? John Wayne does. Burbank could be the Oakland Airport of Los Angeles if they would get more non-stop flights. Many people who live in the vicinity of Burbank Airport would be better off leaving from Burbank than traveling 2 hours in traffic getting to LAX.

I've never flown out of Burbank myself, but there could be a few reasons why there are not many East Coast flights... First, not enough demand. Burbank Airport has been around for a while, but a lot of new service has come in only in recent years. Second, the runways are kind of short. Way too short for 767s, and just barely long enough for 757s, which handle a lot of cross-country flights. Finally, it's a lot closer to LAX than John Wayne or Ontario. While people in the Inland Empire can get to Ontario much faster than LAX, and people in OC can get to John Wayne easily, someone living in the general vicinity of Burbank Airport can get to LAX fairly quickly too.

Burbank Airport is a small airport with only a 6,900ft runway. It has a good amount of service for its size, there is already Long Beach, John Wayne and LAX. Besides you can fly to New York JFK on Jet Blue non-stop and fly to Dallas Ft. Worth non-stop with American to Burbank. Burbank just about has all the service it is going to get.
