From which directions do planes land and take off at San Francisco International Airport?
I have a Qantas flight from Sydney to San Francisco. From there, I'll be flying on American to Las Vegas. I've never been to the Bay Area before. From which directions do planes land and take off at San Francisco International Airport? I want to get a good glimpse of the Golden Gate Bridge and possibly the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum as I arrive in and/or depart from SFO. So what are the chances of spotting the Golden Gate Bridge and the Coliseum during the plane's approach to and/or takeoff from San Francisco? Hopefully, the weather will be okay.

you can't see the golden gate bridge from the plane or SFO. SFO is south of the actual city of San Francisco, so you can't see anything from the plane.

Unfortunately, you won't even get to see San Francisco proper, coming from Sydney. You approach from the south, pretty much, and depending on the season, it can be covered in fog or cloud. I was only getting little glimpses of land here and there as we were coming in - definitely didn't see the bridge. Oakland's also too far north. I've never flown from SFO to Vegas, so I can't comment on that, but I don't think you'll be seeing it either.

whenever I fly into SFO, no matter where in the country I am coming home from, I have never seen the golden gate bridge from the air. normally when you fly into SFO you arrive from the south, flying over san jose and the peninsula and heading straight north to the runway. You never actually will get to see san francisco because the airport is south of the city. and usually when you take off, I think you take off going south bound away from SF & the bridges. once in a blue moon i have gone north over the city, but I don't recall why and you couldn't really see much of anything it was such a steep ascent. you may see the coliseum though as that will be on the right hand side of your plan almost directly across the bay from the airport.

In bound flight is come from south, you can't see the city and coliseum. Outbound flight, fly northwest then turn east, yes, you can see GG bridge if you sit near left side window.

The primary runways at SFO run north-south and most of the time due to prevailing winds, airliners approach from the south and take off to the north. You won't see any of the city on approach, and the Coliseum is not really visible from this side of the Bay. Sorry.
